Diamine Inkvent 2023, Day 14

The Ink

Day 14: Rainbows End - Chameleon

First of all, I think Diamine decided they didn’t want to print apostrophes on the labels for some reason. Bucks Fizz was the first instance (should be Buck’s Fizz), and now today’s ink, Rainbows End. The typical version of this phrase would be “Rainbow’s End”, as in at the end of the rainbow. “Rainbows End” kind of sounds gloomy, like “all rainbows come to an end”, not arriving at the end of the rainbow and seeing the mythological treasure. :smh:

Anyway! Rainbows End is a super saturated violet-leaning blurple with magenta shimmer. It is a stark contrast to yesterday’s translucent chromoshader, Weeping Willow, with pastel khaki, green, and pink tones. And even though I was singing the praises of Weeping Willow, I am still me and love many bright, shimmer inks. I also seem to have a strong preference for Diamine inks with magenta shimmers — Deck the Halls from last year, and Bah Humbug from a couple days ago come to mind.

I am ever so slightly disappointed in this color, though, as its violet base color looks like an uber-saturated version of Jacaranda, and the magenta shimmer from Bah Humbug. It kinda feels like a “repeat” because of this, like Diamine ran out of combos already? 😅 I still like it. It’s just sort of strange to see elements from inks I saw just a few days ago already repeat in the set. 🤷‍♀️

Despite having many purple inks, I only have a couple very close matches. Private Reserve Infinity Violet is an ink that resists drying out, even if you leave the cap off your pen for hours. I bought it because I kept running into issues with my Majohn A2 retractable fountain pen drying out when I left it extended as I was thinking about what to write next. Now I can leave the pen extended indefinitely and it will write immediately when I want it to.

The one thing that I kind of don’t like about this is ink is how solid the color is. There’s very little shading, at least from the A2’s EF nib. It looks like I’m writing with a purple fineliner. 😐 I’ll have to try the ink in broader nibs to see if that brings out the shading more. The swatch exhibits some subtle shading…

When I’m writing with a fountain pen, I want it to look like it, either via line variation/shape, or by the ink properties of shading, shimmer, or sheen. Sometimes unique colors can imply fountain pen ink, but it depends.

Colorverse Hayabusa looks very, very similar to Private Reserve Infinity Violet, even in the lack of shading. So while I like the color, I’m hesitant to use it, thanks to the impression of a marker it makes.

And, as I mentioned before, Jacaranda from day 8, has a similar shade, but is a lot more translucent and has more shading (and no shimmer).

The Quote

Today’s scene is from Parks and Rec, “Ron and Diane”, where Donna, April, Tom, and Andy are begging Ann to let them in to Jerry’s Christmas party, even though they were bullying Jerry behind his back.

Ann: Sorry guys, this is your penance. You can come in if you do something nice for Jerry.

Donna: Hey, I already did something nice for Jerry. I drove here to take him to Jerry Dinner.

Ann: Oh, Donna, you can come in.

Donna: Okay!

*Protesting from Tom, April, and Andy*

Donna: Merry Critches, Bitches!!
