The Ink

Day 6: Bucks Fizz - Chameleon

TIL what a “buck’s fizz” is. Apparently it is sparkling wine or champagne and orange juice, but I know this drink as a mimosa. At first, I searched for “bucks fizz” and found out that’s a band, but Diamine accidentally (?) left out the apostrophe in their title, so I didn’t know any better. 🤷‍♀️

Anyway! This is a medium-light, translucent orange with gold shimmer. When you first swatch it, it looks pretty light, but dries to a slightly darker shade.

Orange is not a favorite color of mine, so I’m a bit meh on this. I do like sunny yellows — yellows with a touch of orange, but this is further on the orange scale than I prefer.

Close-up on the shimmer, since flatbed scanning doesn’t do shimmer justice. I still don’t see the “chameleon-ness” of the shimmer up close.

I happen to have a couple other Diamine inks that are similar to Bucks Fizz: Marigold from their flower inks series, and Sunshine Yellow (the aforementioned “sunny yellow”):

Marigold looks very close, perhaps a touch more of a saturated orange, while Sunshine Yellow is, of course, more yellow (and what I prefer).

I have realized that while I like these sunny yellow shades in large swatches, in writing, they’re sometimes not as legible as you’re writing, and become a bit more legible when dried. But I don’t like having to strain to see what I just wrote, so perhaps these yellows just aren’t for me, at least when writing. They’d be great in paintings.

The Quote

I picked a quote from the oddly-scheduled Christmas episode of Ted Lasso, Carol of the Bells, which originally aired in July, IIRC.

Higgins: To you and all your families back in Lagos, Guadalajara, Groningen, Cordon, Montreal, Benin City, Harare, Kingston, and Santa Cruz de la Sierra. I know you would have preferred to have been with them, but it was truly an honor to have you with us to share our traditions and help make a few new ones. To the family we’re born with and to the family we make along the way. And, most importantly, to Richmond!

This was sort of hard to transcribe, as I had to dip my pen a lot more frequently (not as much ink clung to the nib in a dip) and that resulted in less shimmer in the writing sample. I thought slightly jostling the bottle would kick up enough shimmer, but I realized it was mostly settled at the bottom, so I shook it a bit near the end of the quote. Since the shimmer doesn’t contrast with the base color much, it’s hard to see anyway. Overall, I put this ink into the “for art/painting” category.
