The Ink

Day 7: Sweet Dreams - Scented

Our first scented in of the batch. I didn’t realize it was a scented ink at first. I took a glance at the side of the bottle and thought it said “Standard”, but when I swatched it, the cloying scent hit me. The scent reminds me of a chemical-y “fruit” smell, or the various body washes you find at Bath and Body Works (sorry!). The smell still lingers on the Tomoe River paper I swatched it on, but is kind of faint. Not sure if it would permeate multiple pages of a notebook.

The color really isn’t for me. Firstly, it’s pink. I don’t like pink. But also, there is no shading or any other attribute that makes it look different from, say, using a marker. I’ve realized that I do not like fountain pen inks that are bog standard colors because my writing doesn’t look any different from using a gel pen or a marker. I suppose if I had a different nib grind, the line shape/variation could give a hint, but I much prefer shading inks at the very least. Sadly, a couple of my purple fountain pen inks seem to be like this, so I don’t like them as much.

Since I don’t generally like pink, I don’t have a ton of comparison inks to show. But I happen to have another Diamine flower series ink, Carnation, and a sample of Pelikan Edelstein Rose Quartz.

This shade of pink is very hard to get right on the screen. Neither of these scans, despite post-processing, are representative of the real-life appearance of these inks. Both of them have this weird brownish, muddy undertone that I could not reproduce via image editing, so the scans, frankly, look nicer than they are in real life. And of course, neither of them come close to matching Sweet Dreams. At least these have some shading, though.

The Quote

I pulled this from The Office, “Christmas Party” again. I decided to write using the reverse of my long blade nib since this ink is so wet, but it still occasionally blooped out more than I expected, like in the doodle of the martini glass. If you look closely at the writing (and the swatch at the top), you can see some feathering, on Midori MD paper and Tomoe River (old), respectively.

Meredith: The deal is that this in my last hurrah. ‘Cause I made a New Year’s resolution that I’m not gonna drink anymore…during the week.

😆 :smh":
